Coverage

The North East region consists of the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Darebin, Whittlesea, Banyule and Nillumbik. The region covers an area of over 1,000 square kilometers with a population of over 400,000.

Darebin and Banyule have aging and declining populations while Nillumbik and particularly Whittlesea are developing areas with younger and growing populations. Socio-economic factors indicate that need is highest in Whittlesea and Darebin as compared to Banyule and Nillumbik however, there is a high level of demand on all of the housing services across the region demonstrating that there are areas of disadvantage within all of the LGAs across the region.

The North East region encompasses inner urban as well as suburban and rural areas. The inner parts of the region are well serviced by public transport however transport links are less adequate in the outer parts of the region where travel across the region is particularly difficult.
